      their Model Light 2000.

A company spokesman told us they cannot sell in the U.S. due to some sort of
liability and/or regulatory problem. The spokesman did not go into detail.

Christiania Bikes are sold through dealers, not directly by the
company. This is fairly typical for such a specialised machine, for
example the Brompon is sold in this way and the sole US importer is
well known in folding bike circles.

I'm sorry if there is some sort of legal problem, though it sounds
like a tall story to me. It might be worth finding out what it is and
then asking "consumer" groups about it.

Personally I would think that a more likely explanation is that
nobody is prepared to take on a dealership, which may well be
sensible unless thay are in one or two places in the USA.

=v= I've heard bits and pieces about the issue in New York City.
The profit margins are thin enough that the pedicab operators
are worried about having to pay a lot for insurance, and this is
of course an area with *lots* of customers.

=v= It seems to me that, since pedicabs have the potential to
do a lot less damage than motor vehicles, their insurance should
          cost a lot less.

I bet you the logic they'll invoke is that since the pedicab is much less
massive the threat to passengers _from_ motor vehicles is much higher and
hence they need at least as much insurance. Of course by that rationale
pedestrians should need phenomenal amounts of coverage :)
