Helen Nearing and her husband Scott were never car free. However, they
did advocate a life of simplicity, so I think they must have sympathized
with those who were. They built their houses out of concrete and the
abundant New England stone, using slip forms, and they produced all
their own food.
Scott was at one time an unsuccessful New York City socialistic
politician. He was defeated in a district election against, I believe,
La Guardia. He appears in the Movie _Reds_ as one of the older people
interviewed about Jack Reed. Helen was the writer of the two, although
she added his name to her books.
I was puzzled by Jym's comment, so I did some unsuccessful searches. I
did find that over 1,200 pages mention Helen Nearing, which is fairly
high, in my opinion.
