Group Description

Welcome to a place for folks from Calais or with connections to Calais for asking questions, sharing history, or exchanging information relating to our fair city.

Calais was first settled in the 1700's and incorporated as a city in 1851. Located on the banks of the beautiful St. Croix River where the tide rises and recedes 24-26 feet. An international border crossing, it is the sixth busiest port of entry between Canada and the U.S. The communities of Calais, Maine and St. Stephen, New Brunswick have a long-standing friendship which is celebrated every August during a week long International Festival.

The Calais Waterfront Walkway is the Northern terminus of the EastCoast Greenway, a system of recreational trails and walkways from Maine to Key West, Florida. Within city limits is a lighthouse, Whitlock Mills Lighthouse. In its "backyard" is the Baring Unit of the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge where bald eagles and over 200 other species of birds migrate on the Eastern Flyway.
