Truman State University Press
The Truman State University (TSU) Press Director is responsible for overseeing the strategic vision for the Press and managing all aspects of the operation of the Press to publish 12 to 15 new titles each year in American studies, early modern studies, contemporary nonfiction, and poetry. The Director actively represents and promotes the interests of the Press throughout the university, the academy more broadly, and the publishing industry. The Director will have an understanding of the diverse challenges facing scholarly communications today and advance the development of electronic scholarly publishing and marketing. This position also includes responsibilities to organize, manage, and execute the Press’s marketing and promotional activities to support the goals of the Press in an effective, efficient, and economically successful manner.
50% Press Operations
Manage all aspects of the Press, including the strategic plan, business and financial planning, budgetary oversight, legal rights, editorial, book production, sales, marketing, distribution, and fundraising.
Represent and promote the interests of the Press throughout the university and the academy more broadly, and in the publishing industry.
Understand and address the diverse challenges facing scholarly communications today.
Oversee Press staff and maintain the high quality of editorial and production standards.
Direct the publishing internship program.
Assist in book acquisitions, negotiate and write author and editor contracts, grant permissions, and register works for copyright.
Manage vendor contracts.
Report to the Associate Provost and work with the TSUP Editorial Board to facilitate book publishing projects and promote the University’s education missions.
Plan, develop, and execute appropriate and economical marketing plans for the Press in the areas of: promotions, publicity, sales, book reviews, awards, media contacts, advertising, direct mail, e-marketing, exhibits, book launches, promotional materials and catalogs.
Write copy for books, ads, letters, and other promotional material.
Develop new markets and promote books, journal, and prizes to increase sales.
Forecast sales; evaluate the success of marketing and sales strategies.
Establish and maintain relationships with authors, and external clients.
Represent the University Press at book exhibits.
Manage metadata and use electronic media to market and promote publications.
Set prices, discounts, and print runs for all TSUP publications.
Initiate and oversee updates on the TSUP website.
Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and progressive responsibility in management positions, experience in trade/academic publishing, strength in managing staff in diverse functions, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, strong communication skills, experience in managing a budget, and evidence of innovative thinking to resolve publishing challenges.
Preferred qualifications include a graduate degree in a discipline related to the Press’s publishing areas or an equivalent combination of education and experience in scholarly or trade book publishing; experience with electronic marketing, social media, and e-commerce.
