It offers the B.A. and B.F.A. degrees at the undergraduate level. The department's curriculum includes courses in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, poetry, and screenwriting; literature and critical theory; and book, magazine and electronic publishing. The department has approximately 650 undergraduate majors, 250 graduate students, and a faculty of 44 full-time and 60 adjunct members.

The chair manages the day-to-day functions of the department, works with the faculty to set the direction for the department through strategic planning, is responsible for ensuring the quality and currency of the curriculum, implements plans for the recruitment, development, and mentoring of faculty, and advocates for the department with internal and external constituencies.
