- The Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing at Emerson College seeks to fill the position of Department Chair, with the appointment at senior rank depending on experience and qualifications. The appointment begins August 15, 2012.
We invite applications and nominations of candidates with a terminal degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) or the professional equivalent in creative writing, literary studies, or publishing. We are looking for candidates with strengths in academic leadership, program development, and administration. Candidates are expected to have a strong record of professional accomplishment and significant publications, as well as evidence of teaching excellence.
The Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing has a nationally recognized M.F.A. program in Creative Writing and a unique M.A. program in Publishing and Writing. It offers the B.A. and B.F.A. degrees at the undergraduate level. The department's curriculum includes courses in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, poetry, and screenwriting; literature and critical theory; and book, magazine and electronic publishing. The department has approximately 650 undergraduate majors, 250 graduate students, and a faculty of 44 full-time and 60 adjunct members.
The chair manages the day-to-day functions of the department, works with the faculty to set the direction for the department through strategic planning, is responsible for ensuring the quality and currency of the curriculum, implements plans for the recruitment, development, and mentoring of faculty, and advocates for the department with internal and external constituencies.
