        Oregon Poetry Association Fall Poetry Contest

        The Fall 2012 Contest Categories are:


        1) "Poet's Choice," limit 80 lines, any subject, any form;

        2) "Free Verse," limit 40 lines, any subject, any free form;

        3) "New Poets," limit 30 lines, any subject, any form;

        4) "Traditional Forms," limit 40 lines, will be open to any subject, any traditional form;

        5) "Members Only" (limit 6-12 lines), any subject, any form

        6) "Theme -- Collaboration," any subject, any form;

        limit 40 lines (Note – the collaboration must be between a minimum of two writers and must be a writing collaboration – not a drawing, etc.)

        Awards:

        Poet's Choice: 1st $100; 2nd $50; 3rd $30; 4th $20; HMs.
        Collaboration: 1st $100*, 2nd $50*, 3rd $40*; HMs.
        All other categories: 1st $50; 2nd $30; 3rd $20; HMs.

        Deadline: postmarked 8/31/12

        The Rules



        Poems must be your original, unpublished work. None may be a prior cash winner in any contest.
        You may enter one poem in each category, with no duplication (a different poem in each.)
        Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but entry fees are non-refundable, and OPA is to be notified as soon as possible if your poem is accepted elsewhere. OPA has first publication rights.
        Type or computer-generate poems 10 or 12 point font size, no fancy fonts, black ink only, on copier weight, 8½ x 11 white paper, single-sided with no photos or decorations. If a second page is required, staple the pages together. Do not use paperclips or bindings.
        Copies: Send two copies of each poem. On the 1st copy, in the upper right corner, type:category, line count, name, address, phone number, and email. On the 2nd copy, in the upper right corner, type: category and line count only.
        Collaboration Theme category: Collaborative poems should be submitted by one of the collaborators. The copy with identification should give name and contact information for all collaborators. The accompanying fee should be the amount appropriate for the person making the submission (i.e., included in the flat rate of $5 if the person is a member, $4 for the poem if the person is not a member).
        Members Only category: Check the date on the mailing label to make certain your dues are current.
        New Poets category: On the copy with category, identification, and line count, type and sign the following statement: "I have never won a cash prize for a poem." (That statement refers to any contest, not just those sponsored by OPA.)
        Members of OPA pay a flat rate entry fee of $5 per contest. Non-members pay $4 per poem.
        If you join at the time you enter, you are eligible for the Member rate. 
(Dues must be mailed separately to OPA, P.O. Box 14582, Portland, OR 97293.)
        Mail your entries by 8/31/2012 (postmark) to Colette Tennant, 2885 Grayhawk ct. NW, Salem, OR 97304. Mail all entries in one envelope (if possible, a #10 business size envelope) with proper postage. Please, no registered or certified mail. Keep copies; entries will not be returned.
        If you want acknowledgment that your entry arrived, provide a note and an e-mail address or self-addressed postcard with proper postage. To receive a list of winners, enclose a #10 self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE), or provide an e-mail address for notification.
        Winners will be notified prior to the fall conference to be held October 5-7 in Medford, OR. Those unable to attend will receive prizes by mail. First, second and third place poems may be published in Verseweavers, OPA's annual anthology. All rights revert to author.
