      HACKNEY LITERARY AWARDS
      GUIDELINES for 2009

      The Hackney Literary Awards, sponsored by the Cecil Hackney family of
      Birmingham, Alabama, were established
      in 1969. The annual competition awards $5,000 in prizes for poetry and short
      fiction ($2,500 national and $2,500
      state levels: 1st place, $600; 2nd, $400; 3rd, $250); a $5,000 prize is also
      sponsored by Morris Hackney for an
      unpublished novel.

      GUIDELINES / ENTRY FEES & DEADLINES
      Novel: Length is open but the novel must be unpublished. Publication rights
      revert to winner. Entry fee is $25.00
      per entry (US$ only).Must be postmarkedafter June 1, 2009 and no later than
      September 30, 2009.

      Short Story: Length not to exceed 5,000 words per story. Entry fee is $15.00
      per entry (US$ only).Must be
      postmarked afterSeptember 1, 2009 and no later than November 30, 2009.

      Poetry: Length not to exceed 50 lines per entry. More than one poem may be
      submitted, but all poems together
      must not exceed the 50-line limit per entry. Entry fee is $10.00 per entry (US$
      only). Must be postmarked no
      earlier thanSeptember 1, 2009, and no later than November 30, 2009.

      Entries must be accompanied by either check or money order payable to Hackney
      Literary Awards (U.S. Funds
      only will be accepted). Do not send cash. Entries submitted with accompanying
      cash entry fees will not be
      processed, and fees will not be returned. Refunds for withdrawn entries will
      o
      nly be given through December 31,
      2009. PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE A $30.00 PROCESSING FEE ON ANY RETURNED CHECK.

      If you require confirmation of receipt of your entry, you may send your entry
      via a tracked shipping method (such
      as FedEx) or you may enclose a postage-paid postcard with your entry, and the
      administrator will return it when
      your entry is processed. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE.

      SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
      Only original, unpublished manuscripts may be entered. Submissions from Alabama
      will be entered into the state
      contest unless the author specifies the entry for the national competition.
      Stories and poems will only be entered
      in one category, either NATIONAL or STATE, not both. Entries must be typed,
      double spaced (short story and
      novel only). Novels need not be bound. Each entry must have a cover sheet
      listing: title, author’s name, address,
      telephone number, email address, and category entered (short story, novel, or
      poetry). Author’s name must not
      appear on the actual pages of the manuscript. Multiple entries must be submitted
      separately by deadline dates.
      Manuscripts will not be returned.

      Winners will be notified by the Hackney Awards administrator by phone or email.
      Public announcement of winners
      will not be made unt
      il March 2010 or later, and winners will be posted on the
      website at
      www.bsc.edu/events/hackney. To receive a list of the winners when they are
      announced, you can submit a self-
      addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with your entry. If multiple entries are
      submitted, you need only send one
      SASE to receive a list of contest winners. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE.
