      Lesléa Newman is the author of over 50 books including Heather Has Two Mommies,
      A Letter To Harvey Milk, Writing From The Heart, In Every Laugh a Tear, The
      Femme Mystique, Still Life with Buddy, Fat Chance and Out of the Closet and
      Nothing to Wear. She has received many literary awards including Poetry
      Fellowships from the Massachusetts Artists Fellowship Foundation and the
      National Endowment for the Arts, the Highlights for Children Fiction Writing
      Award, the James Baldwin Award for Cultural Achievement, and two Pushcart Prize
      Nominations. Nine of her books have been Lambda Literary Award finalists. She is
      Poet Laureate of Northampton, MA.

      First prize is $1000 and publication in Naugatuck River Review
      Second prize $250 and publication
      Third prize of $100 and publication

      Winners will be published in the Winter 2010 Issue of Naugatuck River Review.
      All entrants will receive one issue of Naugatuck River Review.

      All poems will be considered for publication in the Winter 2010 Contest issue
      (Issue 3).
      Contest deadline is September 1st, 2009.
      Electronic submissions ONLY will be accepted through our Submission Manager.

            Judge for 2nd Annual Contest: Patricia Smith
            A National Book Award Finalist, Patricia Smith’s fifth book of poetry, Blood Dazzler (Coffee House Press) chronicles the human, physical and emotional toll exacted by Hurricane Katrina, a catastrophic natural event with lasting spiritual and political impact. This much-anticipated volume is also the focal point of a new dance/theater collaboration between Patricia and Urban Bush Women dancer Paloma McGregor.
            Patricia is also the author of Teahouse of the Almighty (Coffee House Press), a National Poetry Series winner, the Best Poetry Book of 2006 on About.com, and a 2007 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and Paterson Poetry Prize winner; Close to Death(Zoland Books), Big Towns, Big Talk (Zoland) and Life According to Motown (Tia Chucha).                 Judge for 4th Annual Contest: Pam Uschuk

                Called by The Bloomsbury Review “one of the most insightful and spirited poets today,” Pamela Uschuk is the author of several volumes of poetry, including: the award-winning Finding Peaches in the Desert, One-Legged Dancer, Scattered Risks, Crazy Love and Wild in the Plaza of Memory (all published by Wings Press) and Without the Comfort of Stars (Sampark Press, New Delhi and London). Crazy Love received the 2010 American Book Award. Scattered Risks was nominated for both a Pulitzer Prize and the 2005 Zacharias Poetry Award (nomination by Ploughshares). Joy Harjo and other musicians joined Uschuk on a CD of Finding Peaches in the Desert. The author of numerous chapbooks, her work has appeared in well over two hundred fifty journals and anthologies, including Agni Review, Calyx, Future Cycles, Nimrod, Parabola, Parnassus Review, Pequod, Ploughshares, Poetry, O Taste and See, 48 Younger American Poets, etc.
