                  $1 per poem for members
                  $3 per poem for nonmembers

                  Contest Guidelines

                  1. The same poem may not be entered in more than one category. Poems may not have won a monetary award in a previous ASPS contest.

                  2. There is no limit on entries, although you may receive only one award per contest. Send a SASE (#10 envelope only) for winners list.

                  3. Submit 2 copies of each poem on 8-1/2×11 paper. Plain type and fonts only. No script. On each copy, put category name and number in the top right hand corner. On one copy only, under the category name and number, put your name and address, "Nonmember" or "Member" and email address. Address labels are acceptable.

                  4. Poems are judged by qualified judges not affiliated with ASPS. Keep a copy of your poems. All poems will be destroyed after judging.

                  Contest # 2 : “The Helen Norris Memorial Contest” Sponsored by Debbie Parvin
                  Poems should be a eulogy about Helen or should be a poem on any subject in which a line or a phrase from one of Helen’s poems is used either in the body or as an epigraph.
                  Please note for the judge the poem from which the line or phrase was used.
                  1 prize $100 Honorable mentions at the judges discretion.


                  Contest #3: “The Yellow Brick Road Award” sponsored by Susan Luther. Write a dramatic monologue in the voice of an character from the Wizard of Oz (except Dorothy) ,tell the rest of the story i.e. what your life has been like after knowing Dorothy and or after OZ.Line limit 50 lines blank verse ( unrhymed Iambic pentameter) or free verse{See Robert Browning for classic examples:”My Last Duchess” or “The Bishop”}

                  Contest #4 : “The Cinderella/ Great Pumpkin Award” sponsored by Susan Luther.Ever taken a ride in a fairy coach and it turned into a pumpkin , metaphorically speaking; I.e. Dream job, love affair, 401-k etc… And was this necessarily a bad thing? Write about it in 40 lines or less 4 prizes $25 each Must be ASPS member and a resident of Alabama to enter.

                  Contest #5 : “The Dylan Thomas Award” in honor of Dylan Thomas who died too young. Sponsored by Writers Anonymous Form villanelle topic: seasons of life or life changes 1st prize $50, 2nd prize $25, 3rd prize $15, honorable mention at the judges discretion. Must be a member of the ASPS.

                  Contest #6 : “My Pet Speaks to Me Award” sponsored by Jodi Adamson Write a poem about what your pet would tell you if he/she could talk. Use the pet as the speaker no form restrictions 12 line limit 1st prize $30,2nd prize $20, 3rd prize $10.

                  Contest #7 : “The Lula Mae Award” sponsored by Taney Brazeal any subject, free verse, line limit 30 1st place $30, 2nd place $20, 3rd place $10

                  Contest #8 : “Call and Response Prize” sponsored by P.T. Paul What brings the poem out in you If it’s a painting if it’s a place let us hear it call to you and let us hear your response length no fewer than 14 lines no longer than a page any form .
