DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH - 2-YEAR LEAVE REPLACEMENT POSITION - FICTION WRITING AND LITERATURE (START FALL 2008)

GRINNELL COLLEGE. 2-year leave replacement position in English, with possible renewal for a third year, with a specialty in creative writing (fiction and possibly non-fiction) and the ability to teach departmental literature courses. Strong candidates should have a Ph.D. in a field of twentieth-century British or American literature in addition to either an MFA or significant publications in fiction and possibly non-fiction writing. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) possible. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college with a dynamic English department in which the study of literature and creative writing remain integrally linked. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. Over the course of the appointment, the teaching schedule of five courses over two semesters will likely include courses in fiction writing and possibly non-fiction writing, our introductory course in literary analysis, and other literature courses commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications. In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They should also discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. Application materials will be considered as they are received, and the position will remain open until it is filled. Send letter of application, c.v., transcripts (copies are acceptable), a fiction or nonfiction writing sample of no more than twenty pages, and three confidential letters of recommendation to Professor Erik Simpson, Chair, Department of English, 1213 Sixth Ave. Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA 50112. EnglishSearch(at)grinnell.edu (replace (at) with @), 641-269-4655, fax 641-269-4733.
