      The contest offers $6,000 in cash prizes for original, unpublished works.
      Each entrant receives a one-year (four-issue) subscription to Grain Magazine. All
      contest winners will also have their winning piece published in the Autumn
      2008 issue of the magazine.Deadline for this year's contest is February 28,
      2008.

      PRIZES
      The contest offers $6,000 in cash prizes for original, unpublished works.
      Each entrant receives a one-year (four-issue) subscription to Grain Magazine. All
      contest winners will also have their winning piece published in the Autumn
      2008 issue of the magazine.
      In each category, Dramatic Monologue, Postcard Story and Prose Poem and Long
      Grain of Truth, three $500 prizes will be awarded.
      CONTEST DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 28, 2008.

      CATEGORIES
      Dramatic Monologue
      A self-contained speech given by a single character in 500 words or less.
      Postcard Story
      A work of narrative fiction in 500 words or less.
      Prose Poem
      A lyric poem written as a prose paragraph in 500 words or less.
      Long Grain Of Truth
      A creative work of non-fiction of 5,000 words or less on any subject

       
      ENTRY RULES
      1. The basic fee for Canadian entrants is $30 for a maximum of two entries in
      any one or two categories. For an additional $8 you may enter up to three
      more pieces in any categories. The basic fee for US and International entrants is
      $36, payable in US funds. The additional $6.00 is for postage of the magazine
      subscription. Make your cheque or money order payable to: Short Grain
      Contest.
      2. Every entrant receives a one-year (four-issue) subscription to Grain
      Magazine. The subscription starts with the Spring 2007 issue.
      3. All entries must be POSTMARKED by FEBRUARY 28, 2008. Late entries will not
      be accepted.
      4. Each entry must be original, unpublished, not submitted elsewhere for
      publication or broadcast, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast, nor
      entered simultaneously in any other contest or competition for which it is
      also eligible to win a prize.
      5. All entries in this contest will be judged anonymously, on merit alone.
      The judges' decisions are final.
      6. A separate covering page must be attached to the text of your entry. On
      the covering page please provide the following information:
           a) Your name, complete mailing address, telephone number, and email
      address.
           b) Title of your entry (ies).
           c) Category or categories you are entering: Postcard Story, Prose Poem,
      Non-Fiction or Dramatic Monologue. If you do not indicate the category you are
      entering, the contest logger will arbitrarily decide for you.
           d) Word count. An absolutely accurate word count is required. Entries in
      the short categories with more than 500 words (not including the title, but
      including -- in Dramatic Monologue -- set-up and stage directions) will be
      disqualified. The maximun word count for Long Grain of Truth is 5,000 words. Do
      not print, type, or write your name on the text pages of your entry.
      7. Your entry should be typed, double-spaced, on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. It
      must be legible. It may be photocopied or printed from a word processor (letter
      quality mode, please). Faxed and/or electronic entries not accepted.
      8. Entries will not be returned. Keep a copy of your entry. We will notify
      you of the final results at the end of the contest IF YOU ENCLOSE AN SASE OR
      EMAIL ADDRESS FOR THAT PURPOSE ONLY. US and International entries please send an
      IRC or CANADIAN POSTAGE.
      9. 19th Annual Short Grain Writing Contest WINNING ENTRIES will be posted on
      the Grain Magazine website the end of April/first part of May 2008. Contest
      winners will notified directly either by telephone, by email or in writing prior
      to the website posting.
