The popular hip-hop fusion band The Welfare Poets has released 'Cruel and
Unusual Punishment,' their first album since the critically acclaimed 2005
release, 'Rhymes for Treason.' Dedicated to the movement to abolish the
death penalty in the United States, the album features an onslaught of
brilliant MCs from around the country who seek to return hip-hop to its
original purpose -- to lift humanity. The album also features a song by
Hasan Shakur, unjustly executed by the state of Texas on August 31, 2006,
whose plight inspired the project (www.hasanshakur.com).

With a de facto national moratorium on executions, abolition won in New
Jersey, and the injustice of capital punishment exposed in case after case,
The Nation remarked last year that "[i]n the long, contentious history of
capital punishment in America, there has never been a moment like this."

Artists featured on Cruel and Unusual Punishment are:

The Welfare Poets -- Rayzer, The Legendary MIC, Jamaki-Bo and Hec-1,
with music from Djibril Jamaki-Bo and John (New York)
Abiodun (of the Last Poets, New York)
      HiCOUP (New Jersey)
      Blitz (Ghana/New York)
      Hasan Salaam (New Jersey)
      Chosan (Sierra Leone/Brooklyn)
      Jav'lin (Amsterdam)
      Son of Nun (Baltimore)
      A-Alikes (New York)
      True-N-Livin (New Jersey)
      Warclub (California)
      InI Mighty Lockdown (New Rochelle)
Wise Intelligent (of the Poor Righteous Teachers, New Jersey)
      Kev King (New York)
Rebel Diaz -- Rodstarz and Lah Tere (Chicago/New York)
      JuggaBlak (Mount Vernon)
Wordplay (of Ancient Tongues Spoken Urban, Cincinnati)
      TriggaN.A.M. (New York)
      LemBoogie (Mount Vernon)
      Sound Right Reason (Connecticut)
      Block McCloud (of Brooklyn Academy)
      Bolos (Brooklyn)
      Truth Universal (New Orleans)
Hasan Shakur (former death row inmate and political prisoner, Texas)

'Cruel and Unsusual Punishment' was also inspired by the cases and lives of
Texas death row activists and political prisoners, Tony Egbuna Ford and
Kenneth Foster. We hope this album sheds the necessary light on their cases
and the inhumane system of capital punishment.

Funds from the album go to the fight against the death penalty.

The album is co-sponsored by The Shield magazine out of Hunter College and
the Campaign to End the Death Penalty (NYC).
