I've only been on US-395 as far south as Mammoth Lakes. Bishop is a fairly
popular town for spending the night from SoCal. I would suggest staying in
Mammoth Lakes which is in a very scenic location.

I would avoid taking US-395 through Carson City as it's too congested. The
best bet, to me, would be to stay on US-395 to Topaz Lake then take 208
to Yerington where you can get on northbound Alt 95 to Silver Springs and
Fernley (don't go east on Alt 95 to Schurtz).

You can get on eastbound I-80 from Fernley to Winnemucca. Have to drive
through downtown Winnemucca to northbound US-95. There's no direct
                    on-ramp to US-95 from I-80.

While there's gas, restaurants, and motels in Winnemucca, I usually get gas
about 23 miles north of Winnemucca at the Chevron on US-95/290. There's
a Shell at Orovad. McDermitt at NV/OR border has a casino on the left with
restrooms as well as a couple of gas stations and a small grocery store.

After McDermitt, there's nothing out there other than the cafe at Burns Junction
which is more likely to be closed than open. Rome has a small cafe. Best bet
after McDermitt is Jordan Valley for gas and food.

At the "T" of US-95 and 55 is a Chevron. East on 55 through Marsing to Nampa
and I-84. Try not to drive on US-95 at night north of Jordan Valley as deer cross
                    that highway.

                    HTH,
