      Pelagic Enthusiasts,

      Greetings!

Just a quick note to let you know of an exciting Shearwater Journeys
pelagic trip coming up on May 3rd from Bodega Bay about 1 1/4 hours north
      of San Francisco.

There's quite a few things happening out in the ocean at this time of year.
First, it is a fantastic time to study albatrosses, those great wanderers
of the sea that are making feeding forays from their nests on Hawaii and
Midway. On average, we see about 100 Black-footed Albatrosses and several
Laysan Albatrosses on May trips. Of course, with all those albatrosses,
Short-tailed is not out of the question and, with their population
dramatically increasing, our chances get better each year. The beginning
of May also heralds the return of seabound migrants heading north - Arctic
Terns, Sabine's Gulls, and, occasionally, Long-tailed Jaegers in their
summer finery. Red Phalaropes are also in full breeding plumage and its a
treat to study numbers of them alongside equally stunning Red-necked
      Phalaropes

Of course, May is also a time for rarities. Summer often produces the best
rarities, along with an excellent diversity of species. Last year, Steve
Howell spotted a Murphy's Petrel which was seen well by most participants.
The possibility of a Dark-rumped or Cook's Petrel or a stray Horned Puffin
amid the more common shearwaters and alcids is a recipe for some exciting
      birding.

Come join us for an exciting day on the ocean!
