Some recent sightings for San Benito County include:
WOOD DUCK, up to four individuals at Paicines Reservoir, Jan 2, 3, 5.
CACKLING GEESE up to eight individuals at Paicines Reservoir, Jan 2.
SPOTTED SANDPIPER one, wintering at Paicines Reservoir, Jan 2, 3.
SORA one at Hollister Industrial Ponds, Jan 4.
BALD EAGLE, adult at Paicines Reservoir, Jan 2, 3.
PRAIRIE FALCON several seen in Panoche Valley, Jan 3; one at Quien
Sabe Road, 5 Jan.
FERRUGINOUS HAWK several seen in Panoche Valley, Jan 3; one at
Comstock Rd., Jan 2; three on Quien Sabe Rd. Jan 5; one on Santa Ana
Valley Rd., Jan 5.
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK one adult male, light morph on Quien Sabe Road, Jan 5.
HOUSE WREN one, Jan 3 on Panoche Valley CBC, on private land; one at
Vista Park Hill in the bottlebrush, Jan 4.
WESTERN TANAGER one at Vista Park Hill, Jan 4.
GENERAL NOTES: If you are searching for the wood ducks at Paicines,
they have been hanging around with the mallards, near the parking
pullout. If you do not see them at first, wait for awhile, as they
often go behind the island. Hollister Sewer Ponds & Industrial Ponds
are woefully low with birds. Practically no shorebirds (no stilts or
avocets). Many of the ponds are completely dry. The best shorebird
habitat remains the mud flat at Paicines Reservoir.
