Purple Gallinule at the San Gabriel River
- The Gallinule was first seen on the west side of the river channel just north of the Mines Ave. entrance Thursday afternoon around 5:45 pm. The west bank was shading the river on the near side and the bird was wading in shallow water and walking through the vegetation. It was observed and photographed for about 10-15 minutes. If it's avoiding the sun and heat of the day, then after 5pm would be the time to see it again. I enter from the Mines Ave. gate on the west side of the spreading grounds and walk straight east over the dike to the river. Turn left at the bike path and walk north to the point where the stream is on the west (near) side of the channel. Photos here at Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/norm72/4954361194/in/photostream/
Good luck finding it. Legg Lake or the Whittier Narrows area may be another area to watch if it moves.
