The Western Field Ornithologists annual meeting will be in Palm Desert, CA
this October and registration will begin this Friday afternoon (May 7) at
      the WFO web site (_http://www.westernfieldornithologists.org/_
      (http://www.westernfieldornithologists.org/) )
As many of you know, WFO meetings offer a unique blend of birding and
science and this year's meeting is a perfect example. There will be field trips
to key area hot spots like both ends of the Salton Sea, Big Morongo
Canyon, Mt. San Jacinto, Anza Borrego, local legendary fall vagrant 'traps' and
a special trip to locate Mountain Quail. There will be presentations from
Paul Lehman on rare migrants and vagrants, Dr. Cameron Barrows on local
ecology, and Dr. Douglas Altshuler on flight in birds, mammals, and insects.
Workshops are offered on Fall Sparrows (Jon Dunn), Field Sound Recording
(Nathan Pieplow), Describing Bird Sounds (Sylvia Gallagher), Skin Preparation
(with Kimball Garrett and friends) and Data Mining (yours truly). And, as
always, an excellent set of Scientific Sessions with the latest research on
western Ornithology and Photo ID and Bird Sound ID panels (moderated by Ed
Harper and Nathan Pieplow). Our local host is Kurt Leuschner, of College of
      the Desert.
A special bonus this year is a three-day post-meeting trip to the Colorado
River Delta in Mexico led by Osvel Hinojosa-Huerta, Carol Beardmore, and
Dave Krueper. Only 12 spots available on this trip on a first come-first
served basis once registration opens up Friday afternoon.
Full details on all of the above are available to download at the WFO web
site. As always, register early to make sure you get your first choice of
      field trips.
      See you in Palm Desert
      Ed Pandolfino
      Carmichael, CA
