      Hi Birders

You are cordially to attend the season's opening monthly meeting this
coming Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 7:30pm. The address is Plummer
Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd., Rm 6, West Hollywood, CA 90046.
Refreshments will be served at the bookstore after the meeting.

      "Birds, Bergs, and Beasts"

Dave Weeshoff, will present photos and quips of his recent travels
to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.
Included will be penguins, albatrosses, petrels, whales, cute seal
pups, sea lions, and other rascally creatures, as well as amazing
icebergs and landscapes of phenomenal beauty. Come help him identify
some of the mystery birds in his photos.

Dave is on the Board of Directors of the International Bird Rescue
Research Center and the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, and is a
frequent guest speaker on environmental issues for Heal the Bay, an
organization concerned with improving the water quality off the
Southern California coast, and the Algalita Marine Research
Foundation, concerned with the plague of plastic in the oceans.

As we are all aware, the Station Fire in the San Gabriel mountains
above Los Angeles was the worst forest fire in this range in over 50
years. It is hoped that you did not suffer any ill-affects from the
fire, and that the forest will experience re-growth in the years to
come. Many large conifers and oaks and huge stretches of chaparral
are gone, extensive food supplies have been lost, and much wildlife
may be displaced or lost. Although, this is the time of the year
some montane species frequent the foothills and lowlands, you may see
a larger number of individuals visiting these areas. Please join us
this night to share the experiences and to listen to Dave's great
      program!

      See you there!

      Mary Freeman

Los Angeles Audubon Society Program Chair and Fieldtrip Leader
