      Hi MBBers & Calbirders

Everyone survived the Big Sur Bird Count today. Participants and the total species count were both depressed by less than perfect weather and the fallout from this summer's infernos; nevertheless there were?a few?high points.?Buoyed by a gorgeous sunrise and count circle classics like Mountain Quail, Spotted Owl, Rufous-crowned Sparrow and California Condor, we pulled out a stalwart if sub-par 115 species. The best bird of the?day was a Dusky Flycatcher found by Mike Tyner (VWS) on the south side of the Big Sur River; scare in the higher elevations during?spring and summer,?it is quite rare as a winter sojourner on the central?coast, with only a handful of precedents in Mty. County.

Good luck with everyone elses' counts,
      Blake Matheson
