      If you restrict your interest to CALIFORNIA varieties, and you need an
      introduction rather than a comprehensive guide, your local larger bookstore may
      have some folding laminated cards that would suit your purpose, such as the
      Pocket Naturalist series. Beyond that, given that some folks find the full-size
      Sibley birding field guide "easy to carry," while others chafe even at the
      size of the individual Eastern or Western volumes, this is one choice where a
      trip to the bookstore may better suit your needs. While there are books that
      nominally cover California birds only, that makes for an artificial
      distinction, given that at last count, the official state list was, what, 620 species?
