From Dept. Fish and Game, In response to the original post on birders' reporting
Burrowing Owl and other sensitive species:

"I was very happy to see your post. I have been trying for years to get
birders to submit information to the CNDDB, but with very limited
success. Birders may not be professional biologists but they have
developed an expertise in bird identification. The CNDDB botany shop has
developed a wonderful relationship with the California Native Plant Society
(CNPS). This is a very similar situation to birders; most CNPS members
are not professional botanists but they have developed an expertise in
plant identification and they are a great source of information for
the botany side of the CNDDB.

We will gladly accept information from birders. I suggest they
download a current Special Animals list
      http://www.dfg.ca.gov/biogeodata/cnddb/pdfs/SPAnimals.pdf . The Oct
2007 list is what is posted now, but the February 2008 list will be
posted by next week and it will contain the changes from the updated Bird
      Species of Special Concern list
      http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/species/ssc/birds.html . For many birds
we track only nesting locations and that is indicated on the Special
      Animals list.

I hope that your post will encourage many birders to submit information
to the CNDDB. And again, thank you.
