      Hi, all!

If anyone has plans to go to the Lagunas this weekend, it'd be great if you
could spend some time around the Desert View Picnic Area and see if these/this
guy(s) pops up: while parked at the potties I heard a nasal, querulous
"AH-ha! AH-AH-ha!" to the west that further north I would have noted as Pinyon
Jays, no problem. But that's all the vocalization I heard, I couldn't find
the thing(s), and there were also Acorn Woodpeckers in the same vicinity, which
CAN make very Pinyon Jay timbre-like calls, but I've never heard them do a
multi-syllabalic vocalization like that; I've only heard the rising "awwAAAA!"
call from the woodpeckers. My sound byte isn't nearly enough to document
this, so considering how rare this bird is in the county (and that historically
they tend to hang around for awhile), someone might want to go on a "wild
jay chase" up there over the weekend, just in case...

Other goodies included an early SHARP-SHINNED HAWK that terrorized a
Steller's Jay and Acorn Woodpecker (he wasn't any bigger than them...) and lots of
migrants going through! Is it my imagination, or are there more
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS around this fall than previous years?? Every place I've
birded since mid-August I've gotten at least one!

      Good birding,

        Hi all,

Now that you mention it..... Last Sunday, coming back from the pelagic trip (which was absolutely awesome :-) I stopped at Buckman Springs rest area on I-8 and went to the top of the hang glider jump off to the east. Three Lawrence's Goldfinch and five California Thrashers were pretty cool and there were other treats as well. Especially the young Horned Lizard! The one that bugged me the most was that I thought I heard a Pinyon Jay calling and when I finally caught sight of the culprit, it was disappearing into the oaks at the bottom of the canyon and what I got was less than a glimpse. Watched for awhile but never heard it again. Kept telling myself "no way" and that is still what I think. Altitude too low, wrong habitat, lone bird........ My hearing compared to Mary Beth is no comparison, that's a compliment Mary Beth, but it sure sounded Pinyon Jay to me! Ask me if I think it was there and I wil deny everything....

        See ya at the sea.........
