Hello birders...here has what has been reported over the past week in
northwestern California. Call the Arcata birdbox at 707-822-5666 for more
      information and more explicit directions.

      HIGHLIGHTS:

Area at the big shorebird scrape at the south end of the main trail on
      August 1.

Gary Bloomfield had a HOODED MERGANSER at the Arcata Oxidation Ponds on
August 1 in the southernmost pond.

WILLOW FLYCATCHERS continued on territories at the confluence of the Van

The possible heavily-faded BLACK-HEADED GULL reported by Sean McAllister at
the mouth of the Elk River (seen from Hilfiker Lane in Eureka) on July 27th
continued to July 30 (Scott Kerry). It is now generally thought to be a
worn MEW GULL. Scott Kerry had a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER here on July 30, and
there were 6 COMMON TERNS on the 27th (Stan Harris and Kerry Ross).

Brian Accord reported a pair of HOODED ORIOLES with young at Anna Way and
Wilson in Arcata on 30 July.

Kerry Ross had 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a RUDDY DUCK on the 28th 2 miles
downstream of Fernbridge on the Eel River.

Gary Lester reported 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS flying over his residence on
      Azalea Hill on July 26.

Scott Kerry on July 26 reported 3 RED KNOTS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and
CASPIAN and ELEGANT TERNS from Klopp Lake at the Arcata Marsh. On the
25th from the north jetty he had 3 BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS and SOOTY
      SHEARWATERS.
