'Black-headed Gull' at Eureka is not

    A worn second-year gull in Eureka seen since 7-23 that had been tentatively identified as a Com. Black-headed Gull has been re-identified as a Mew Gull.

      A worn second-year gull in Eureka seen since 7-23 that had been tentatively
      identified as a Com. Black-headed Gull has been re-identified as a Mew Gull.
      Examination of photographs by several who have seen it and one who hasn't
      (thanks, Joe!) make it obvious that it's this species. The mistake may seem
      unlikely, but distance, lack of definitive plumage characteristics, and the
      irrestible power of suggestion conspired to mislead some observers --present
      company with hand held high.
