CENTRAL COAST BIRDING RALLY SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 3-5

The rally is a celebration and showcase of northern Santa Barbara County sites on the Central Coast Birding Trail. It caters to birders of all abilities. The Open Class is a competition and normally draws birders with considerable experience. The Hobby Class has both a competitive and a non-competitive division and caters to those with any level of experience. In either class, teams bird three pre-selected trail sites within a five-hour timeframe. Open Class teams can identify birds either by sight or sound while Hobby Class participants are restricted to sight identification.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three Open Class teams. In past events, open class teams recorded over 100 species during the five hour rally. Non-competitive Hobby Class teams that see three targeted trail specialty birds: a Heerman's Gull, an Oak Titmouse and a Wrentit will be recognized with a prize. The number of awards for the competitive Hobby Class will be determined by the number of entries. There is also a Hobby Class award for the individual who adds the most species to their life list.

There are no fees for this weekend event that includes a Santa Maria style bar-b-cue immediately following the rally.

The Central Coast Birding Rally is less than two months away. Support from the local business community and from benefactors from across the United States enable us to put this event on without charging a participation fee. The entire weekend event is free and includes a Friday evening reception, the Saturday morning rally, a Saturday afternoon Santa Maria style bar-b-cue and auction of birding related items and a Sunday Big Site (not to be confused with a Big Sit). You can take part in either the non-competitive or the competitive rally. The competitive venue includes both a hobby and an open class for the more experienced birder. We are providing an event that is a lot of fun. You can contribute to our effort by showing the business community that indeed, birding is a popular hobby, that birders travel beyond their homes in pursuit of their hobby and most importantly that the conservation of wildlife and habitat benefits the entire community. The October 3-5 weekend event will be held in the three valleys of northern Santa Barbara County. For more information including an entry form that can be downloaded, check out our website: http://lpas.westhost.com/rally/ .
