For years, debate has "raged" (!?) about the county
that owns Santa Barbara Island. Under California law,
Santa Barbara Island belongs to Santa Barbara County,
a legacy of the day in 1872 when Ventura County was
split off from Santa Barbara County, and the California
legislature couldn't find it in their heart to take the
eponymous island from its original county.
But if Santa Barbara Island is in Santa Barbara County,
then pelagic birders who are obsessive about their
county lists are frustrated by the discontinuous county
      lines this creates.
But now more confusion! The North American Numbering
Plan Administration is the body that manages telephone
area codes. According to their map at <www.nanpa.org>,
San Nicolas Island is in telephone area code 310! As
you know, 310 is around Santa Monica, so that means
poor Santa Barbara Island is now isolated (literally)
      between area codes and counties.
My advice. See the bird. Forget the county.
