Unprecedented numbers of Swainson's Hawks continue to stream through
Borrego Valley, San Diego County, CA, taking advantage of abundant
sphinx moth caterpillars. Hal Cohen has spearheaded the first-ever count
here, having been out most days for the last two weeks. Most days there
are only two of us trying to document migration through a 5 mile wide
valley. The hawks behave differently each day and the valley is too
      large to cover adequately.

      Nonetheless, recent daily totals are:

April 3- 100 SW left in fields-no migrants

April 4- 204 in several kettles migrate, 50
      left in the area

April 5- 105 in two major kettles migrate and
      40 left.

April 5- At sunset, between 1800 and 1820 (standard time), Hal
witnessed a single group of 700 arrive in a "funnel cloud", descending
and splitting into two groups. A thorough search of the valley the next
morning only turned up 210, which all migrated. It is assumed the
remainder landed further up Coyote Canyon somewhere and were not seen.

      April 6- 210 migrate

      April 7- 185 migrate

It is all very confusing but we will try our best to sort it out and
post final totals (including submitting data to hawk watch
organizations that want it) after migration is over. The number known to
have migrated through so far is in excess of 1700.
