I just got from a short trip to Carrizo Plain area. Found a pair of
Le Conte's thrashers at the intersection of Cadet and Petroleum Club
roads south from Taft. Look in and around a large sinkhole-like
depression in the NE sector of the intersection. The birds seem to
prefer the areas where shrubs are most widely spaced (apparently, I'm
not the only one who hates bushes).
On Carrizo Plain itself, there were lots of Golden eagles, and one
Ferruginous hawk near the HQ.
Looks like this is a good year for Carrizo's endangered mammals: in 4
hours of night driving, I counted 32 Giant kangaroo rats, 2 Fresno
kang. rats, and 3 San Joaquin kit foxes. Also found a kit fox den
with half-grown cubs. I'll have video stills posted on my site later
Oh, and there are great wildflower displays around Soda Lake and on
Hwy 58 between Carrizo Plain and Hwy 101.
