2003 socal pelagic trips - Laysan 2-1-03
- kyu kyu kyu kyu kyuuuu kyuuuuu kyuuuu!
The new SoCal 2003 pelagic schedule is now up at:
The best trip of the year for finding Laysan Albatross is on the Condor Express in February to the Arguello Cyn. area. I've been out there in Feb., 6 times. Thrice we had three Laysans, thrice we had two, never (yet) having missed it in Feb. out there.
Last years trip was cancelled because we were between "Condors" (boats). This is also a great trip for alcids. Seas permitting we go to the area where the multiple Parakeet Auklets were recorded several years back on the CALCOFI cruise, and keep our fingers crossed, wear
our lucky underwear, etc.. Half of the Feb
trips have found Leach's Storm-Petrels. We have
had a thousand each of Cassin's Auklet, Fulmar, and Black-legged Kittiwake on Feb. trips before too.
This years trip is Feb. 1, the first Saturday of the month. Trips are about 15 hours, and leave at 5 a.m. from Sta. Barbara. Cheaper motels are in Goleta and Carpinteria (Motel 6's) if you need lodging. Contact www.condorcruises.com if you have questions, or call Sea Landing to make reservations at 805-963-3564. 99.9% of those who have been on the modern, stable, high speed Condor Express say there is nothing like it for pelagic birding, often running down birds that otherwise would have gotten away. Boldly going when and where no other boat can go...
Since April 2001 I have seen Murphy's, Dark-rumped and a Cookilaria Petrel in this area, on these one-of-a-kind pelagic birding adventures.
Lots of info about Arguello and the Condor XP is at my site above, as well as a socal seabird abundance calendar to give you a good idea when what is here.
See ya asea!
