The 27th annual meeting of the Western Field Ornithologists will be
October 10 - 13, 2002 in Irvine and Costa Mesa, Orange County,
Think about coming! Full details, including registration forms, are
at www.seaandsageaudubon.org. The field trips, papers on current
field ornithology research of interest to biologist and birders,
workshops, poster session, and social activities should not be missed.
Robert Pitman, the noted marine biologist will be the featured speaker
at the annual dinner on Saturday evening, speaking on the Pacific
pelagic frontier. No one knows the Pacific better than Bob. He
spends a significant portion of each year on the Pacific pelagic
Philip Unitt will be speaking at the Friday night barbecue (at the San
Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary) on the surprises found during the years of
the San Diego Bird Atlas.
Field trips will include the best locations in Orange County, many of
them not accessible under other circumstances. Hawk banding, an
electric boat trip to bird on Newport Back Bay, an owl prowl, night
hiking at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, UC Irvine's private
San Joaquin Marsh are just a few. Special trips can be arranged to
Santa Cruz Island for Channel Island Scrub Jay. Post-meeting
fundraising field trips are to the coastal region of Northern Baja
California with Mike San Miguel and Dan Cooper and Salton Sea with Jon
Dunn and Guy McCaskie.
