Red-billed Tropicbird on San Clemente Island
A Red-billed Tropicbird was found today, 4 August, sitting on the water just
west of China Point, San Clemente Island. The bird was estimated to be
roughly 500 meters offshore. Hopefully this will be the start of regular
sightings in the area. In addition to the tropicbird were a single Caspian
Tern (adult), a rarity on the Channel Islands, and the fall's first adult
Pomarine Jaeger (light-morph adult). 5 Pink-footed Shearwaters and 4 Sooty
Shearwaters were also seen.
Numbers of tubenoses are down compared to last summer at this location,
perhaps indicating a change in sea-surface conditions. Still looking for
that first island record of Craveri's Murrelet!
