Masked Boobies off Long Beach, LA County
- This afternoon, Adam Searcy and I rode the Harbor Breeze whale and dolphin observation boat from Long Beach. We saw the continuing TWO Masked Boobies on the red "LB" buoy about 1 mile out (south) from the breakwater. One bird is an adult and one is an immature.
The boats run at 12 and 3PM and take about 2-2.5 hours return trip. Captain Carl is prepared to make the small detour to see the birds for those interested. We probably got within 20-30 feet of them as they stared at us and poked each other with their bills. Needless to say, the photographic consequences were stunning. I will provide a link once I download and review my photos.
Other birds out there included Northern Fulmars, Sooty, Pink-footed and Black-vented Shearwaters, and Cassin's Auklets. A Parasitic Jaeger was present in the inner harbor.
