The 12-hour pelagic trip on Sunday, June 16, aboard "Grande" out of San
Diego to the 9-Mile and 30-Mile Banks in light seas produced the following:

      Pacific Loon: 2
      Pink-footed Shearwater: 60
      BULLER'S SHEARWATER: 1 (see below)
      Sooty Shearwater: 550
      BLACK-VENTED SHEARWATER: 1 (early)
      Black Storm-Petrel: 70
      Ashy Storm-Petrel: 4 (30-Mile Bank)
BROWN BOOBY: 1 (sub-adult 19 nm W of tip of Point Loma)
Least Tern: 8 (incl. as far offshore as 30-Mile Bank)
      Elegant Tern: 25
      Royal Tern: 3
      Common Tern: 2 (one-year-olds)
      Pomarine Jaeger: 1
COMMON MURRE: 1 (rare in summer)
      Scripps's Murrelet: 3
      Cassin's Auklet: 20

Also a BLUE WHALE directly under the boat! (Could see part of it sticking
well out one side of boat while the other side stuck well out the other!)

BULLER'S SHEARWATER: exceptionally early arrival, 14 nm W of tip of Point
Loma, first spotted by Matt Sadowski, photo'd. The previous earliest
arrival for San Diego waters is in late July, and the species is typically
not "regular" off s. CA until late August, if then. Interestingly, I saw
      one just 8 days earlier off Oregon, which is the first June record there;
so it will be interesting to see if these are just two random, very rare
events or part of a larger-scale 'event' unfolding in 2013.
