The half-day (6-hour) San Diego pelagic trip aboard "Grande" out to the
9-Mile Bank on 13 April was highlighted by TWO BROWN BOOBIES: one circled
close around the boat 5.7 nm SW of Point Loma and the other was sitting at
the base of Zuniga Jetty with cormorants as we cam back in to port! Both
were immatures/sub-adults and were recognizably different plumage-wise.
Other highlights were a pair of Scipps's Murrelets with a very young chick
right next to the boat, and waves of migrant Pacific Loons heading north.
Also a close BLUE WHALE. Here are selected totals of the seabirds:

      Brant: 150
      Red-throated Loon: 6
      Pacific Loon: 4300
      Common Loon: 4
      Northern Fulmar: 6
      Pink-footed Shearwater: 4
      Sooty Shearwater: 22
      Black-vented Shearwater: 3
      Black Storm-Petrel: 4
      BROWN BOOBY: 2
      Surfbird: 25
      Black Turnstone: 35
      Wandering Tattler: 1
      Red-necked Phalarope: 6
      Common Murre: 1
      Scripps's Murrelet: 45
      Cassin's Auklet: 42
      Rhinoceros Auklet: 2
      Rufous Hummingbird: 1
      Yellow-rumped Warbler: 1
