      Hi,

This reminder email is being sent to the four California list servs
which cover all or portions of Kern County.

The Kern America's Birdiest Inland County Big Birding "Weekend" dates
have been set. Please mark your calendars with the hopefulness of
      your participation.

3:30pm-Midnight, Th, 2 May 13 - 72 Hour Kern County Big Weekend of Birding

Midnight-Midnight, Fr, 3 May 13 - 72 Hour Kern County Big Weekend of Birding

Midnight-Midnight, Sa, 4 May 13 - 72 Hour Kern County Big Weekend of Birding

Midnight-3:30pm, Su, 5 May 13 - 72 Hour Kern County Big Weekend of Birding

Note that although the days/dates are set, the exact starting and
ending times might be modified a bit as the event approaches.

The event this year has added the words Kern County Big Weekend of
Birding with the hopefulness of garnering even greater participation
than the 80-150 participants in previous years. Kern County Audubon
chapters (Kern AS, Kerncrest AS) and groups (e.g.: Tehachapi), plus
other groups in Kern County (e.g.: those associated with Bitter Creek
NWR, Bakersfield & Ridgecrest BLM offices, China Lake NAWS, Edwards
AFB, irrigation/water districts, Kern County Parks, Kern County Water
Agency, Kern National Wildlife Refuge, Los Padres National Forest,
municipal sewage ponds, private landowners, Sequoia National Forest,
Tejon Ranch, Tule Elk State Natural Reserve, and Wind Wolves
Preserve) are encouraged to expand their coverage and participation
as are those of individuals, small private groups, owling groups
(often very successful!), formal field trips, bird-a-thons,
out-of-area birders/birding groups field trips, etc., etc. etc. The
annual Kerncrest Audubon Society Bird-a-thon is interfaced as it is
set for Saturday, May 4, 2013, the results of which will likely add a
significant number of species to the overall total as in past years.

With lingering winter birds, early arriving nesting season birds,
plentiful migrants, good weather, good access, and lots and lots of
participation, we might even break the all time Kern County record of
      246 species achieved in 2006 and 2009.

NOTE: 242 species was the Kern total for 2012 which once again led
the nation for inland counties and was second in the nation overall.
Los Angeles County earned America's Birdiest County overall
recognition in 2012 with 264 species (NOTE: The Los Angeles count is
usually held the week before Kern's. I am confident they would
welcome additional participation; especially from those of us who
live next to or relatively close to the county line).

Final reminder and details will follow in April after my March 21st
through April 16th trip to Costa Rica.

      In the meantime,...

Continued Happy & Productive 2013 Birding,

Bob Barnes, Ridgecrest, Kern County, California
