Report Banded Brown Pelicans, Win a Pair of Binoculars
- Hi all.
Sorry for the major cross posting; some of you are going to see this message quite a few times.
International Bird Rescue has announced a contest for the most rehabilitated Brown Pelicans reported to their website between now and February 2. Details are at http://www.bird-rescue.org/pelican-project/banded-pelican-sighting-contest.aspx, or http://tinyurl.com/beo43ps.
For the past couple of years, IBR has been outfitting the Brown Pelicans they release with blue leg bands with a code in white consisting of one letter and two digits, e.g. S19. There are now 1000 birds sporting these bands, but Brown Pelicans released earlier with just metal bands are also eligible if you can obtain the entire nine digit code, e.g. 0669-00130. Birds have been released from both the Fairfield and San Pedro facilities and have been reported over a wide area from Mexico to Washington and in some Gulf states.
I imagine that most birders already report their marked bird sightings to the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Bird Banding Laboratory, http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/bblretrv/, but this challenge adds a little extra incentive.
