The Holland America cruise, 8-11 May 2012, from San Diego to Vancouver, faced gale force winds for 30 hours, but saw some good birds.  They had 38-45 knot headwinds with 15-24 ft seas!  No seasickness reported;  those stabilizers on the large ships really help.

On 9 May, a very close Hawaiian Petrel was spotted off Santa Cruz County in 9480 feet of water.  Coordinates were 36' 48.52 N
      122' 55.04 W.

Later the same day, another Dark-rumped Petrel was spotted in northern San Mateo County in 8390 feet of water.  (37' 25.14 N
      123' 26.14 W)

On 10 May, a Cook's Petrel was seen approximately 40 nautical miles west of Arcada, Humbolt County, in 9610 feet.
      (40' 53.60 N 125' 00.58 W)  Also in northern California were two Parakeet Auklets approximately 40 nautical miles off Big Lagoon, Humbolt County.  (41' 11.64 N 125' 00,65 W)

Oregon was slow:  one Parakeet Auklet recorded there.  Washington had one Murphy's Petrel, two Parakeet Auklets, and one (getting-late) Short-tailed Shearwater.

posting for Paul Lehman but stuck in San Diego,
