I've observed huge feeding frenzies of Brown Pelicans lately as well and
was speaking to local fisherman - they said there has been huge schools
of sardines and mackerels in Santa Monica Bay the pelicans have been
      feeding on.

Perhaps another contributing factor related to the push north of BFBOs
      this year?

I believe the "starving" issue in past years were due to domoic acid

Does anyone know if the what the Pelican status is in SM Bay? They seem to be feeding like crazy, but I keep seeing old reports that they are starving.
And, today, 9/25, at noon, about a half mile off the shore across from lifeguard stand #14, there was a giant raft of something -couple thousand maybe - anyone see them?Too far for my binocs.
