MotherJones.com Catches Lays In Lies
- Dear MotherJones.com Reader,
When Linda Lay, wife of former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, cried poor on NBC's "Today" show last month, she failed to mention one salient fact: The couple have more than $4 million socked away in investments shielded from both creditors and legal judgments.
That fact was uncovered by Bill Hogan, Mother Jones' Washington Editor, whose article on the Lays' investment ploy drew a record number of readers to MotherJones.com last week. On the day it was published, Bill's article, "Ken Lay's Nest Egg," led the site to an all-time, one-day traffic record of 105,000 page views -- surpassing our previous high by more than 30 percent.
Mother Jones' dedicated Communications Director was able to use Bill's scoop to encourage both mainstream and alternative news outlets to pursue the story. CNN interviewed Bill, and USA Today and London's Evening Standard both followed with their own versions of the findings. The combined daily reach of the MotherJones.com Exclusive exceeded 2 million viewers and readers!
Gifts to the Mother Jones Investigative Fund helped us to hire Bill. Your tax-deductible gift of $25, $50, $100 or $500 given today will keep our "Watchdog" on the ground in Washington.
