      Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Brett Hull assisted on a goal by new linemate
Mike Modano and Ed Belfour made 27 saves to outplay two-time
Hart Trophy winner Dominik Hasek as the Dallas Stars opened the
season with a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Hull left St. Louis and signed a three-year, $17 million
contract with the Stars on July 3rd. He was placed on Dallas'
top line with Modano and Jere Lehtinen, and the trio combined
for five points, including a goal and two assists by Modano.

The Stars went ahead for good at 10:40 of the first period.
Modano slid a cross-ice pass to the left faceoff circle, where
Darryl Sydor blasted a slap shot past Hasek.

Dallas made it 2-0 when Sergei Zubov fired a wrist shot from the
right point that was deflected by Hull. Hasek made the save but
Modano was waiting at the left post for the rebound and knocked
it by the goaltender with 51 seconds left in the opening period.

Belfour turned aside all eight shots in the first period, 14 in
the second and five in the third as Dallas defeated the Sabres
for the 12th time in their last 15 meetings.

Hasek, the only player in NHL history with back-to-back Hart and
Vezina trophies, started inauspiciously. He stopped just six of
eight shots in the first period and finished with 22 saves,
allowing power-play goals to Pat Verbeek in the second and
      Lehtinen in the third.
