Group Description

The Foundation was established by Harold and Kay Kutler in 1983 based on the work of a Benedictine monk, Brother Benno Garrity, from the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, California. Brother Benno died in 1992 after dedicating his life to feeding the poor and homeless. People still talk about the bread Brother Benno baked and took to those in need. The Foundation began with a small soup kitchen at 307 Minnesota Street in Oceanside, and has grown into a ministry addressing many types of social problems in San Diego County, including hunger, homelessness, and alcohol and drug addiction. The majority of "guests" used to be homeless men, however, the majority of "guests" served are now working poor families.

The Brother Bennos Auxiliary provides support for the Brother Benno Foundation and promotes awareness of Brother Benno's in the larger community by fund-raising and supporting the present and future needs of the Brother Benno Foundation.

Events

The women of the Brother Benno's started this project years ago to aid the increasing number of mothers with small children and single women who desperatly need housing and a chance to restart their lives. Our house of Martha Ann Mary, an emergency shelter, has been meeting this need for 15 years.

Bi-Annual Cookie Sale / School Supplies fundraiser
Twice a year the Auxiliary sells cookies at the Carlsbad Faire in May and November. Proceeds are used to purchase backpacks and school supplies K-12 school children in the greater Oceanside area.
