Group Description

This working group is a private collaboration space for Brooks family researchers who have (by DNA testing) conclusively proven a connection with descendants of a large eastern TN Brooks family (around Cocke County). Additional research and genetic testing has conclusively proven that some central NC Brooks families (around Chatham County) as well as northwestern SC Brooks families belong to this same group. These Brooks families are believed to be descended from Matthew Brooks, b. ca 1711 in VA or one of his close male relatives.

Why is this group closed to the public? Because Brooks is not an uncommon name across the USA and UK, and prior to genetic testing there was much confusion, speculation and and mixing of research. Matching DNA tests keep us (and you) from wasting time on false leads.

If you would like to subscribe and share information with this group you must:

1) Have a Y-DNA analysis on a direct-line male Brooks family member, the results of which show a close match to others in this R1a1a haplogroup. I recommend Family Tree DNA as a testing facility [familytreedna.com] - join the Brooks family project to receive a discount on testing,

2) Have completed enough traditional ("paper-trail") genealogical research to reasonably establish a solid connection to this specific Brooks family (which has primary clusters in eastern TN, northwestern SC, and central NC).

If you can prove a close relationship (within the last 100 years) to someone who has already tested, please contact the moderator to be considered for admission without DNA testing.

If your DNA results have unexpectedly matched this R1a1a Books family group (an exact or very close match at a minimum of 25 markers), you are automatically eligible to join this group to share your information and attempt to identify a connection. Please contact the administrator with your FTDNA kit number and you will be admitted.
