      Hello all...

I was elated to find where my family landed in the New World, from the book "Broad Bay Pioneers". Melchior UHLMANN and his family came to Broad Bay in 1742 from northern Switzerland. I pick them up later in 1749 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. As yet I am unable to connect the families whereabouts from approximately 1744 to Halifax in 1749.

If I understand correctly, there were actually two attempts to settle Broad Bay, the first about 1738 being destroyed by an Indian attack in 1746 and the second begun about 1748. Samuel Miller suggests that after the attack in 1746 the settlers dispersed to St. Georges and Pemaquid. Also at this time many men joined the military for the attack on the French at Louisbourg in 1745. If my information is correct, I'm looking at the first settlement of Broad Bay.

I'm looking for the two options where the UHLMANN family were. First, does anyone have information on land grants from Waldo which might give a clue to where my family were? Are there any lists of settlers who went to St. Georges and Pemaquid in 1746? Second, are there any lists of men who joined the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment under Waldo? After the capture of the fortress, some stayed at Louisbourg during the occupation from 1745 to 1748.

Many thanks for listening, hope to hear from you.

        Dear Malcolm,
In researching my own family name, I found early deeds for Lincoln Co. filed at the York County Courthouse, at Alfred, Maine. These were lands deeded by Christopher Toppan...but there may well be Waldo deeds there. You might contact them and ask them to look up Uhlmann in their index for the period you're researching. They have sent me photocopies of original documents for a photocopying fee (about $1.50 per page).

Lincoln County Courthouse in Wiscasset, Maine 04578, has records from about 1752 on. Earlier records are reportedly available in the Massachusetts Archives near Boston. I can't help you with that as I haven't yet searched them myself.

Thanks again. I certainly would like to contact them if you think they might have deeds from that time period (1742-1749). Or would you suggest trying to contact the Archives?

              Hi Malcolm,
Waldoboro is in Lincoln Co. At the time the earliest of the deeds were written, the area was part of York County. One historian mentioned the filing of deeds at York county by some early settlers fleeing the Indian attacks. York Courthouse had a deed for land at Newcastle (Dec. 1736); and others for 1739, 1741, and 1742 ...transactions by Samuel MacLaine of NewCastle...this area of Newcastle is now the town of Sheepscot on the upper Sheepscot River. Later deeds (March 1759) for land in New Gloucester were transactions by a Wm. McClean, weaver and resident of Gloucester, Massachusetts. And...in looking to answer this question of dates for you, I find two deeds for land on the Western River of St. Georges Sold to a list of 28 subscribers by Samuel Waldo of Boston...40 lots of 100 acres. Lots for the land "to be drawn at Pemaquid on or before the fourth of May"... contract of 18th April 1735.This land is now Warren, Maine and vicinity. None of the 28 include the Uhlmann name. Because I went looking specifically for McLains of all spellings, I can't comment on what else may be available in the courthouse holdings.
The Maine State Archives are also a potentially rich resource,I haven't yet tapped.Postal code for Alfred 04002.
