Hello friends, in September, the California Legislature passed AJR 57 a symbolic and critical resolution that stated "that under existing California law, state and local law enforcement agencies lack the legal authority to stop, arrest or detain persons based upon suspected or alleged violations of the civil provisions of the federal immigrations laws, except when detention is mandated pursuant to a detainer issued by the INS and only for the period of time authorized by such detainer." As many of you know the fear of INS and police collaboration is a reality for the immigrant communities we work with.
Valerie Small Navarro from the ACLU, American Civil Liberties Union is interested in seeing if we could/need to pass additional legislation to protect immigrants. So, your help is needed and appreciated. ACLU would like to assess whether there is a problem, whether local law enforcement agencies are working with or communicating with the INS. If you have heard of police or sheriff department participating in joint questioning with INS agents or arresting people for illegal presence in the United States, please send Valerie Small Navarro: vsmallnavarro@... detailed information. Please give her a call if you have any questions: 916) 442-1036x2. Attached is more information. Thanks as always for your support!
