Rubén Patrick Valdés, a US citizen accused of human trafficking and the deaths of eleven migrants, was arrested in Ciudad Juárez by the Agencia Federal de Investigaciones (Federal Investigation Agency, AFI). He was immediately extradited to the US where there are two arrest warrants for him in Sherman, Texas for the death of two migrants. There is another warrant out for his arrest in El Paso, Texas where Valdés is wanted for migrant trafficking.
Valdés is the alleged ahead of a group of migrant traffickers, according to Tom Roepke, the federal investigator in charge of the case. Roepke said that Valdés and his group have allegedly brought between 900 and 1,000 undocumented people into the US since 1999.
Among the thirteen shipments of people to the US that Valdés allegedly organized, one included 28 Mexican citizens that were found dehydrated in the back of a tractor trailer in July, 2002. Two of the people in the metal trailer died from the heat.
Valdés allegedly paid truck drivers US$150 for each person they transported. Each immigrant reportedly paid US$1,500 for Valdés services, according to US officials quoted in the Cd. Juárez newspaper El Diario.
