Viequenses denounce sentences for Zenons as abusive

The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV) denounced as
excessive, abusive and violent, the six month sentences given yesterday to
anti-military activists Carlos Zenn and his son, Yabureibo. Spokespersons
for the Vieques organization suggested the sentence is part of a military
strategy developed at the Navy base of Roosevelt Roads, in the town of
Ceiba, Puerto Rico. We have no doubt that Admiral Green was consulted by
Judge Fust on this sentence, said Nilda Medina, CRDV. The sentence can
only be understood in the context of military plans to do away with the
civil disobedience movement and thereby continue with their maneuvers in
      Vieques, she concluded.

Members of the Committee affirmed their total support for the Zenon family,
who have played a central role in the struggle during decades, and most
particularly, after the death of David Sanes in April of 1999, when they
established the Monte David civil disobedience camp in the bombing zone.
Yabureibo Zenn, age eighteen, is part of the Vieques youth movement that
has become very active in the struggle for peace here. Carlos Taso Zenn,
has been active in the struggle against the Navy since the founding of the
Vieques Fishermens Association at the end of the 1970s. In that period of
the struggle, Zenn and other fishermen blocked military maneuvers on
several occasions, resulting in arrests and repression by federal marshalls,
      courts and jails.

The Committee urges people in solidarity to write to these most recent
      prisioners for peace on Vieques:
