May 1 General Strike Coalition meeting Sunday Jan 22, 2 PM, 1866 E. 1st St.

The Occupy Los Angeles General Strike Preparation Committee is
hosting a May 1 General Strike coalition meeting on Sunday, January
22 at 2:00 PM at 1866 E. First Street in Boyle Heights (LA 90033), on
the second floor in a banquet hall.

Occupy LA has been projecting a call for a General Strike on
International Workers Day since November, when it planned the Dec. 12
"Occupy the Ports" action. Like Dec. 12, the May 1 action is linked
to an immigrants rights mobilization. OLA has been participating with
several of the immigrant rights coalitions and is hoping to build a
broad, deep and powerful coalition around its call for a General
Strike on May 1 for IM/MIGRANTS RIGHTS! for ECONOMIC, SOCIAL &
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE and LABOR RIGHTS! for PEACE with JUSTICE! for
CIVIL LIBERTIES-END THE POLICE STATE! for HOUSING, EDUCATION & HEALTH
CARE as HUMAN RIGHTS! for WOMEN'S RIGHTS & GENDER EQUITY!

The call for the General Strike has been picked up by Occupy Long
Beach, Pasadena, Riverside, Venice and others. Several committees of
Occupy LA, including the Labor Committee, the Wellness Committee,
Immigrant Rights, and Resources have all plugged in to the organizing
effort, and the General Strike Preparation Committee has set up a
number of functioning sub-committees, including Labor, Student and
Community Outreach sub-committees, media, research & logistics, and
rolling (build-up) actions. Eighty or more people have been attending
meetings of the General Strike Preparation Committee and its
sub-committees. Occupy LA met with the three immigrants rights
coalitions planning marches and rallies on May 1, and has invited all
to participate in the General Strike Coalition, which seeks to bring
the momentum and influence of the Occupy movement to bear on uniting
the 99% behind immigrants', labor, and other human rights. Organized
and unorganized labor have also been participating and are invited to
the Coalition meeting. A number of union locals are scheduled to have
expired or expiring contracts by May 1, which is expected to swell
      the ranks of the protestors.

For more information about additional upcoming meetings, contact

Many of the sub-committees of the OLA General Strike Preparation
Committee will be meeting Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 PM at Corazon del
Pueblo, 2003 E. First St., Los Angeles 90033. There is also a special
"themed" General Assembly of Occupy LA focusing on the May 1 General
Strike on Saturday, January 28 at 4:00 PM on the west steps of City
      Hall (Solidarity Park).
