- Hollywood City Council, Labor Groups Endorse March 8th Against the
LOS ANGELES: Support for the call issued by GABNet/Mariposa
Alliance to turn March 8th into a women's protest against the so-
called "global war on terror" (gwot) exemplified by the US invasion
of Iraq continues to snowball as International Women's Day
approaches. Labor groups constitute the most recent flock of
endorsers for the 8th March mobilization against the war. The Asian
Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), Multi-ethnic Immigrant
Worker Organizing Network (MIWON), the US Labor Against the War, and
the Southern California Coalition on Occupational Safety and Health
(SoCalCOSH) were the newest endorsers.
On 8th March, GABNet/Mariposa will hold marches in New York City and
Los Angeles. The Los Angeles gathering will be at 10:30am at the
corner of Olympic and Broadway in Downtown, and end with a program
in Pershing Square. while New Yorkers will gather at the Washington
Square Park, from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. Some Hollywood actresses are
expected to be at the Los Angeles gathering.
The new endorsers are actually clusters of several labor groups.
MIWON, for instance, includes the Coalition for Humane Immigrant
Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Garment Workers Center, Korean
Immigrant Workers Alliance, Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur
de California and the Pilipino Workers Center.
In addition, the City Council of West Hollywood, among the first
cities to declare against the invasion of Iraq, informed GABNet
National Chair Annalisa Enrile that it has included in its agenda a
resolution of support for the 8th March Against the War. With the
encouragement of Mayor John L. Duran of the City of West Hollywood,
the resolution is expected to be approved without problem.
Dr. Enrile was one of three GABNet members whom the Macapagal-
Arroyo government of the Philippines tried to prevent from returning
to the U.S. after attending a women's conference in Manila. It was
the first direct attack by the Philippine government on an overseas-
Since then, Dr. Enrile has been leading the formation of the
Mariposa Alliance, with its initial ten-organization women's
membership. The Mariposa Alliance is named to honor the Mirabal
sisters of the Dominican Republic who were assassinated on the
orders of the US-backed dictator Rafael Trujillo. The day of their
murder, Nov. 25th, marks the first day of the 16-days of activism
against gender violence celebrated all over the world.
