      ~~~ Friends and companer@s... A new temporary
      formation has been created, especially to coordinate a
      press conference at City Hall on the 18th to protest
      and raise awareness of the current human rights crisis
      in El Salvador. It is the
      SO. CAL.
      EMERGENCY COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN EL SALVADOR.
      Our objective is to hold a press conference with
      religious, labor, political and other sectors
      represented --- along with the solidarity movement--
      and to focus the press on the horrendous recent
      developments in El Salvador. IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE
      ANYTHING AROUND EL SALVADOR LATELY,
      THIS IS THE THING TO DO! All groups can come together
      because the work is being done around this broad
      committee.
      Can you attend? [details below] Can you add your
      name and/or your group's name to the press alert? Can
      you mobilize people to attend with signs and banners
      focusing on stopping human rights abuses in
      El Salvador? Can you volunteer to blitz the press
      alert through your organization? You can respond back
      to this e-mail address, call 323-852-0721 with your
      information or call Don White at his
      cell for clarification: 323-556-1932... THE
      This call for solidarity for the Salvadoran
      people comes from:
      The So. Cal. Emergency Committee on Human Rights in
      El Salvador
      EVENT!
      ~~~~ Press Conference on the steps of City Hall in
      downtown Los Angeles, Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 11:00
      a.m. The conference will be at the south lawn, at
      First and Main.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      The So. Cal. EMERGENCY COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN
      EL SALVADOR consists of religious, community and labor
      groups as well as solidarity organizations and the
      Salvadoran community. PLEASE ADD YOUR NAME OR YOUR
      GROUP'S NAME BY POSTING BACK TO CISPES, one of many
      organizations in the Committee or by calling
      323-852-0721 and leaving the details of your
      endorsement.

      The issues:
      ==== death squad activity is reactivated and
      escalating in El Salvador. The elderly parents of a
      co-founder of Radio Venceremos were brutally tortured
      and murdered in their own home in Suchitoto July 1.
      The couple, ages 77 and 75, were targeted because of
      their family's long history of social justice
      struggles. Their son, Paco Cutumay, was assassinated
      in 1996.
      ==== Police opened fire on a student protest over
      raises in electricity and transportation costs on July
      6, 2006 in what is being described as the most brutal
      repression of civilian populations since the signing
      of the Peace Accords in 1992. There were reports that
      unknown persons, attempting to provoke an attack on
      the students, fired into the police squads, killing
      three and wounding others. Three student deaths have
      been reported as well as many serious injuries.
      ==== Government round-ups of youth, implementing the
      cover of focusing on "drug gangs and terrorists," has
      resulted in many arrests and confinement of young
      activists, fighting the neoliberal policies of the
      present ARENA government.

      ~~~~ Please sign on to the press conference demands by
      posting back to this e-mail. The demands will be:
      * Investigate the death squad murders of Francisco
      Antonio Manzanares and his wife Juana Monjaras de
      Manzanares in Suchitoto and bring their murderers to
      justice.
      * End the police repression of student protests and
      release all youth now detained as a result of the
      outrageous government repression of the demonstration
      at the National University.
      * End the indiscriminate repression of youth under the
      guise of anti-gang, anti-drug, anti-terrorist
      initiatives. Respect the rights of youth to protest
      government policies.
      * Reverse the large increases in electricity and
      transportation and other consumers items which make it
      impossible for Salvadoran families to survive.
      Thank you for your solidarity,
