Come be a witness to history as we join the Salvadoran
social movement, progressive unions, and the leftist
FMLN party in their inspiring celebration of May Day
International Workers Day. May 1st is more than
just a holiday in El Salvador; it signifies national
        and international consciousness, conviction, and
solidarity. Its signifies the rallying cry
"The workers, united, will never be defeated!"

In March 2004 the right-wing ARENA party stole the
Presidential Elections with the help of US government
intervention. In December 2004 they unconstitutionally
ratified CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade
Agreement, surrounding the national assembly with riot
        police to keep protestors out.

The social movement and unions are calling for our
        solidarity NOW more than ever!

On this delegation we will meet with:

        * The Popular Social Block (BPS), a coalition of
        organizations on the
frontlines of the struggle against CAFTA and
        privatization.

        * The Women's Secretariat of the FMLN who is fighting
hard for the rights of women in Salvadoran society

        * An FMLN mayor and see the alternative vision of
        development in action

        * And, we will participate in a wide variety of May
        Day activities
organized by our partners in El Salvador including:
-- The BIG May Day march
-- A press conference where we demand respect for
        workers rights

        Download the application at

or call our national office at (212) 465-8115 or the
        Los Angeles office at 323-852-0721.

              CISPES-LA DENOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF JOHN NEGROPONTE;
CALLS FOR VIGOROUS CAMPAIGN TO BLOCK CONFIRMATION
The appointment of career diplomat John Negroponte
by President Bush to be the the Director of National
Intelligence brings back sad and shocking memories to
those who were active in the Central America struggles
of the 1980's, while Negroponte was ambassador to
              Honduras.
The appointment, on live television early Thursday
morning, stunned the solidarity and peace movements.
Negroponte was linked to human rights abuses in
Central America and has been dogged by credible
testimony that he ignored the use of torture during
              the contra war against Nicaragua.
The appointment calls for Senate confirmation and
CISPES is suggesting phone calls to the U.S. Senate
calling for a no vote on confirmation. The
Congressional switchboard is 202-224-3121 and then a
request to speak to Sen. Boxer or Sen. Feinstein.
In addition to his work with the Nicaraguan Contra
army, Negroponte helped conceal from Congress the
murder, kidnapping and torture abuses of a
CIA-equipped and trained Honduran military unit,
Battalion 3-16. No mention of these human rights
abuses ever appeared in State Department Human Rights
reports from Honduras. The Baltimore Sun reported
that Efrain Diaz Arrivillaga, then a delegate in the
Honduran Congress and a voice of dissent, told the Sun
that he complained to Negroponte on numerous occasions
about the Honduran army's human rights abuses. Rick
Chidester, a junior embassy official under Negroponte,
reported to the Sun that he was forced to omit an
exhaustive gathering of human rights violations from
              his 1982 State Department report.
Sister Laetitia Bordes went on a fact-finding
delegation to Honduras in May, 1982, to investigate
the whereabouts of 32 Salvadoran nuns and women of
faith who fled to Honduras in 1981 after Archbishop
Oscar Romero's assassination. Negroponte claimed the
embassy knew nothing, but in 1996, Negroponte's
predecessor Jack Binns reported that the women had
been captured, tortured and them crammed into
helicopters from which they were tossed to their
              deaths.

Studies for Global Justice invites Community, Labor,
                Political, Environmental and Economic Justice
Activists to a five session study series on:

WORKING PEOPLE IN THE NEO- LIBERAL ERA
Looking for a deeper analysis of 21st century
                capitalism

We live in a time of war abroad and economic attacks
at home. Regulations that were once supposed to
protect our environment, health, and safety are being
eroded as public health, education, and retirement
programs are all on the chopping block. Good jobs are
disappearing, wages and benefits are declining, and
the minimum wage is lower (in real dollars) than it
was 25 years ago. What's going on with working people
and labor in this neo-liberal era? Is this just the
climate of the times? Is it globalization? Is it a
result of conscious policies? Are there alternatives?

This series will examine these happenings, questions
and more in five thoughtful and participatory sessions
based on our collective experiences and readings.
